WHY SILICONE
On our Silicone Facts page, we detail some of the reasons silicone is the ideal sex toy material.

At Tantus, we take great pride in the toys we make. Silicone is the perfect material for producing fine adult toys, being superior in almost every way than more commonly used materials.
Silicone is the most reliable, safe, health-smart soft material used for toys. Tantus Silicone toys are made of 100% Ultra-Premium Platinum quality silicone. They not only get home alive, but with a little care they can last a lifetime. You can be assured that a toy from Tantus Silicone is a toy that is safe to be used!

Silicone is hygienic. No open pores to harbor bacteria.

Silicone is hypoallergenic. It has no reaction to chemistry of the body, 100% silicone toys are completely inert. They don't alter pH balance, or cause a reaction to the body's natural chemistry.

Silicone is phthalate free. You can recognize a toy with phthalates by the smell (if you can smell a toy, it is leaching chemicals). Toys made of "jelly" and other mystery materials use phthalates as plasticizers to soften an otherwise hard material. Most bodies react to phthalates as an allergy. With inflammation, rashes and discharge-mimicking a yeast infection. Phthalates are also endocrine disruptors; they interfere with normal animal hormonal systems effectively supplementing a person's estrogen. They are also respiratory inhibitors.

Silicone is easy to clean. Silicone can be boiled or bleached; they're even dishwasher safe. We recommend antibacterial dishwashing soap. Our toys are completely safe up to 600° F.

The reason for "no silicone lube on silicone toys". Silicone lubricant may bond to the toy. This isn't true for all silicone toys-it depends on the purity of the silicone toy and the purity of the lubricant. If you wish to test your silicone toy with silicone lube use the bottom of the flanged base and do a test square.

The first time we were together, I reached into my bedside drawer to get a strap-on, she grabbed at my arm. She told me while she loved sex toys, they didn't love her. Every time she tried a dildo or any soft vibrator she felt broken in the morning. Her pussy was red and swollen, and she could hardly walk. It hurt- and not in that good way. There was something very very wrong.

She had been playing with novelties!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Metis and I'm the President of Tantus Silicone. I'm part of an industry that makes "novelties". Novelties is one of those elusive words that you think means one thing- nice polite word for sex toys, while it really means something totally different. "Novelty" is a legal term for a product never intended for use. Most toys in your average adult store are clearly marked "for sale as novelty product only". Well that's great if you're a kinky decorator and or gag gift aficionado, but as a girl who likes to play it makes for a frustratingly empty toy box.

I play with toys just like you. In fact, part of my job as a toy designer, is to understand how and why one product is better than another and how to make new toys even more effective. No one can relay those messages more efficiently to me than to experience them first hand. Prostate free, I still tried an Aneros to see how it worked. I put my Feeldoe™ in and found motivation and opportunity to do my kegels as a daily régime. I've also bought other name brand items that were a great idea poorly executed and completely missed their mark. Some purchases I wouldn't let near my body. It was bad enough opening the package without a gas mask and protective gloves. Novelty is an industry built around the adage: BUYER BEWARE.

A sex toy should be safe to play with. It should have a design that works with your anatomy and be finished so that it won't cause scratches or abrasions in your most sensitive flesh. It should also be made of a material that is safe and won't cause physical reactions to its chemicals. One size never fits all, and some of us are more sensitive than others. As consumers you need to educate yourselves. Where do you find that kind of information? It's here right now.

Before we go over all materials though, I'd like to explain about phthalates. You probably haven't ever heard of a phthalate, but you've certainly smelled them. They are softeners added to what would naturally be a hard material. Phthalates are "new car smell". They are respiratory inhibitors and carcinogens. In novelties, you can recognize them as soon as you open the packaging; they smell.

BUY Tantus wholesale

When you can smell a toy you can be sure of one thing; that the chemistry is unstable and the toy is out gassing. Studies have mainly been done on exposure to animals and the results are the things that horror stories are made of. The latest studies indicate that phthalates are endocrine disruptors interfering with hormones and boosting estrogen levels. Besides a possible link to the reduction of sperm count and the rise in frequency of testicular cancer, this disruption of hormones may counteract breast cancer medicines. And any transmen should really think twice about what they are playing with. Baby product manufacturers and pet product manufacturers have voluntarily eliminated phthalates from their product lines, but with novelties... we're back to buyer beware.

Novelty Materials Facts
Mystery Materials: Let's face it; there is a lot of mystery meat in our toy chests. Who can tell what it really is... only a chemist. And in a store with no material listed on the packaging you either have to be psychic or you're taking major gambles. Are these products safe? I'd recommend using a condom on them. If your latex sensitive- don't take a chance. And some of these materials melt if you look at them funny. Keep them out of the sun and away from any other toys.

Over the condom you can use water soluble lubricant or a silicone lubricant. If you are using these toys condom free, then use only water based lubes and dedicate them to one person. Chances are the pores are open on your mystery material toys; you will be sharing any bacteria no matter how much you attempt to clean them. And cleaning can be tricky. A special toy cleaner is the safest bet. A soft soap is also possible. If the toy has electronic components (no matter what material it's made of), you want to very gently use a wash rag to soap it up and then to rinse.

Jelly Rubber: Is your toy translucent with lots of bubbles? Does it smell like a chemical factory? If so, you have Jelly in your collection. Jelly is PVC with a phthalate softener. Now PVC is perfectly safe- your water pipes are PVC and it meets all food grade standards. It's the phthalate that really makes Jelly a problem. Upon exposure you may find your intimate parts enflamed and burning and you may have a discharge that is very similar to a yeast infection. The only safe way to enjoy jelly is to put a condom over it.

Only water soluble lubricants should be used because other lubes will melt the jelly material- in fact a jelly toy may melt sitting too close to a toy of another material. Dishwashing liquid soaps are too harsh for this type of toy and alcohol will dissolve it. Toy cleaners are really recommended. To store your jelly make certain it is dry and separated from other toys, you don't want to clean the puddle you may wake up to.

Latex: Latex is probably the most common material used for toys. It's certainly been around the longest (since the 30's). It's inexpensive and it's made into every shape and size. Latex is always opaque and often flesh toned. You have probably heard of latex allergy or sensitivity; it is getting more and more common. The more exposure you have to latex, the more likely you are to begin getting reactions. Health workers using latex gloves day in day out are especially at risk. But after many years of safely using your toys, if you wake one morning to reactions mimicking yeast infections: inflammation, rash and discharge, throw the latex away.

The pores on latex are semi porous, so funny as it sounds you should cover your latex toy with a latex condom. As any safe sex student knows, never use an oil based lube on latex- it breaks down and destroys the structure of the material. Alcohol will also break it down. Latex should be cleaned with a soft soap or a special toy cleaner.

CyberSkin™, SoftSkin™, and UltraSkin™ feel almost real. They are soft and subtle and certainly ideal for packing. The base materials are combinations of silicone and latex and the like. If you are latex sensitive- Beware.

Tantus has done experiments combining latex with silicone, the softer we make it (the more latex we use) the more it seeps. Oil is released. You can do a blot test on a clean sheet of paper at home to see how your toy stands up. I don't know about you, but I put toys in either my pussy or my ass- both of which have very sensitive skin separating the toy from my blood stream. When we speak of chemicals not being stable remember where they are escaping.

Because of the silicone you don't want to use silicone lubricant with these materials. Because of the latex you don't want to use oil based lubricants. Lubricants in fact, seem to degrade these materials. They make a nice soft stiffy absolutely flaccid. The safest way to use these products if they are for insertion is to wrap it in a condom.

Cleaning is of the utmost importance with these skin-like materials in order to maintain the texture. They are semi porous and if you rub them firmly you will tare the surface. Special toy cleaner or mild hand soap is recommended. And then you need to dry this material inside and out. To keep it from getting sticky, you need to dust all surfaces with cornstarch before they are put away (not talcum powder, which may cause cervical cancer).

Elastomers are the latest innovations. We are seeing them in our kitchen ware, our toothbrushes and finally our sex toys. Elastomers are soft patented polymers and while they sound like a mystery, they are phthalate free and some even have closed pores and are remarkably durable.

The biggest problem that I see with these products is that they aren't really getting the recognition they deserve. Vibratex new soft vibrator bodies are made of safe Elastomers; California Exotics also has a line that has "Phthalate Free" printed across the front of the package.

But as these sex smart materials are so diverse, and as yet unknown by retailers and consumers alike, they are hard to recognize and even harder to generalize about as to care and cleaning. When in doubt use a condom and a water soluble lubricant and wash with soft soap. Hopefully packaging will include more details soon.

Silicone is hands down the safest soft material for anything you're going to put into your body. Granted, I'm not unbiased- but I don't know any sex educator who is unbiased in this area. The more you research the issue of safety and sexuality the more you will resolve that silicone is the best product in the marketplace right now.

Silicone is hygienic because it has no open pores to harbor bacteria and it is so easy to clean. It is stable in high temperatures and will be fine up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. You can boil or autoclave it. You can also bleach it in a 10% bleach solution or use alcohol swabs. Considering where your toys go- hygiene should be of the utmost importance. Yes, you may put it in your dishwasher.

Silicone is also hypoallergenic. It's inert so it doesn't react to any other materials and it is stable so it doesn't disintegrate or react when sitting beside something else.

Now all silicones are not the same. There are different grades of silicone: tin and platinum. They have different chemical make ups, longevities, and compatibilities. While all of the above facts are true for either silicone, only platinum grades can be medical grade quality. No silicone used in toys (that I know of) has had the FDA qualify its materials. It's time consuming and expensive and to get medical liability insurance would make the cost of your toys more than triple.

Because of the different qualities of silicone out there, and the different qualities of silicone in lubrications, some silicone lubricants bond to some silicone toys. The only thing that will stick to silicone is silicone. That bonding quality is why you calk your windows (also a silica based product). It's impossible to give you all the exceptions- thus we make a blanket statement that silicone lubricants are incompatible with silicone toys. If you love silicone lubricant, try a test patch on the bottom base of your silicone toy. If the patch doesn't get gummy, so the only way to clean it is with your thumb nail, it's probably going to be just fine.

The pursuit of pleasure... what could be more wonderful! The adult toy industry is full of amazing people creating amazing products. The dynamics of what get you off is our business. Your satisfaction is very important- and every time a case of product leaves Tantus Silicone we think about the potential orgasms going out the door. But the reality is as a consumer you have to take responsibility for what you put into your body.

Tantus is a company that produces silicone sex toys, including vibrators, dildos, butt-plugs and strap-on harness kits. They are based in Chula Vista, California, and are the largest producer of silicone sex toys in the United States. All of their product are made from high grade medical silicone which is considered to have safety and environmental benefits, and is the main differentiator in their marketing. One of their best known products is the Feeldoe dildo, which is a harness-less strap-on dildo.

Metis Black founded Tantus in 1998. She has gone on to write several articles on sexual health and plastics, the chemistry of lubricants and has been featured on articles about green sex toys

BDSM Toys, Implements and Basic Useage: An Introduction
Pain play refers to the incorporation of erotic pain into sexually-oriented play. For someone new to using pain erotically, the techniques to do this successfully and safely are often somewhat elusive. With this article, I hope to enlighten all those curious but inexperienced with light S&M erotic pain - the toys and implements to use, and basic instructions of how to play safely with them. Please note that this article can only give a brief introduction into the techniques used, but if pain play is of interest to you, there are many books, websites, sex toys and resources available to help you learn more about this intriguing aspect of S&M. As always, only play safely and only on a consensual basis.
Arousal and Pain: What is erotic pain?
It's common for people to wonder why pain can be erotic. When someone is aroused, the tolerance for pain may increase within the confines of the sexual encounter. For someone who is responsive to pain, each individual will have their own likes and dislikes. These preferences are to be respected and explored, but NEVER ignored. Listen carefully to the thoughts and feelings of your play partner, and follow the rule of beginning lightly and slowly, and building intensity. It is also wise to have discussed a 'safe word' - meaning a word that when said aloud by the submissive partner, the scene and its activity are immediately ceased. A safe word should be something easy to remember - such as 'red' - that will be immediately honored by the Dominant partner.

When beginning to explore pain play, many people begin with using pain within a sexual encounter. Lightly biting your lover's neck, scratching his back with your fingernails, pinching her nipples softly and caressing them - these are all forms of erotic pain play, and represent a softer, safer, and mutually enjoyable point to begin. You may continue to explore this with gestures that carry more meaning, such as holding onto or lightly pulling hair, lightly slapping, spanking, cupping and gently squeezing the testicles. Note what your partner is enjoying and if you should find that they aren't enjoying something, move along to something else, decreasing the intensity. Many people require full arousal to like experiencing erotic pain, and if the pain is too sudden or too intense, loss or arousal or a negative reaction may result.

Common Pain Implements and B&D/S&M Toys
Hands-On: Spanking. Spanking can begin as caresses, lying your partner over your lap with your hand on their buttocks. Use your other hand to stroke them intimately, teasing them as you move to light, playful spanks. Focus on the fleshy, lower section of the buttocks; do not hit below (thighs), or above, (tailbone), as this may cause injury or discomfort. Slightly cup your hand, keeping your fingers together, to spank, and caress the spot briefly after each spank. Give a short set of spanks, building slowly in intensity.
Slapping. As slapping tends to be a meaningful gesture - one showing great Dominance and eliciting a variety of feelings from the recipient - this needs to be a mutually discussed activity before playing. Note that those wearing glasses or contact lenses should NOT be slapped in the face. When slapping, place your other hand on the other side of your partner's face as a precaution; injuries have resulted when someone reacted naturally by turning their head with the slap. Though other parts of the body can be slapped or smacked, such as the shaft of the penis or a woman's vulva, you must keep these blows light in accordance with what your partner can reasonably handle and enjoy.

Paddles. Paddles vary in type and construction - from smooth wood to thick leather. Use a broad bdsm paddle that bears no cutout holes, sharp edges, rivets or studs - these will likely leave marks as well as increasing the likelihood of abrading skin. Be aware that bdsm paddling your partner is more severe than spanking, so begin lightly and limit the number of strokes. It is a good idea to give the stroke, and then wait for your partner to nod to accept the next stroke. As with hand spanking, restrict your paddling to the fleshy area of the buttocks. Paddling that strikes bony or sensitive areas can bruise and cause injury.

Slappers. A Slapper is usually made of two pieces of rigid leather, sewn together at the handle end and left open at the other. When you strike with a slapper, the two open end pieces slap together, making an audible smacking sound. Note that the narrowness of many slappers increases the chance of leaving welts, so limit your initial sets and use light to moderate force only on the fleshy part of the buttocks.

Riding crops. Though they seem benign, riding crops can be used to tickle your partner's body as well as whip sensitive areas. Practice your accuracy by hitting a pillow or stuffed animal - you will want to be able to hit specific spots without missing. You can caress your partner's body with the crop - particularly nipples, tracing along their thighs to their genitals, and gently stroking their body as they contemplate what you're up to. Strike softly, alternating between using the crop as a whip and an extension of your hand, stroking and caressing. You can flick your partner's nipples, tap him lightly on his penis, and whip her behind. Do not use a crop above the shoulder blades, on the neck, hands, or feet. Women's genitals can only lightly be tapped, and most men can only take light tapping on their penis and extremely light (or none) tapping on their testicles. Restrict blows to fleshy areas.

Whips/Floggers. For those getting familiar with pain play, I do not recommend single-tail whips. These narrow whips produce an intense, painful sensation concentrated in a very small striking area. The accuracy and experience required to use them is beyond the scope of this article, and injuries such as lacerations, eye injuries, and ear injuries can occur with inexperienced users.

Multi-tailed Whips. There are two types of these: cat-o-nine tails and floggers. Cats are distinguishable due to their braided tails, while floggers have many flat tails and a relatively short handle. For the purposes of this article, I will recommend floggers over the more-abrasive cats. Beware of heavy-leather floggers with tails comprising of sharp strips of leather and sharp edges. One of the best types of floggers to begin learning with is one made of soft, lightweight leather, (like deerskin.) Building intensity from light to moderate, this floggers is unlikely to leave marks or case injury when used properly. Stand back from your partner, and look at the spot you wish to strike. Aim the tips of the flogger at this spot, and try to avoid 'wrapping' the ends around the body, (which often causes marks.) Broad partnes of the body, like the buttocks, back, and chest, may be whipped, but avoid: breasts, genitals, inside of the thighs, hips, and limbs.

Clamps. Select broad, flat-surfaced clamps to begin, and if the clamps allow for you to adjust the tightness, this is a big plus. As with other activities, it is important for your partner to be fully aroused when accepting clamps; understand that not everyone will be able to take even the lightest clamp administered even briefly. People have different tolerance levels of pain, and there are times that the pain from clamps is completely non-erotic to the partner. Use clamps briefly - for no more than twenty minutes - at this beginning stage. Note that clamps continuously hurt while being worn, even if you have busied yourself with playing or engaged in a sexual encounter. NEVER forget to remove a clamp on a timely basis; remember that clamps close off blood circulation when fastened.

How to apply nipple clamps: nipple clamps may be applied to nipples to begin. Pinch open the nipple clamp, and use your other hand to pinch the nipple, beginning lightly and increasing intensity until it is near the intensity of the chosen nipple clamp. Raise the nipple up, aim slightly behind the nipple's tip, and approach so the clamp is applied parallel to your partner's body. Close the nipple clamps over the nipple very slowly until it has closed completely, and move your hand away carefully. Do not hit, bump, pull or twist a clamped nipple. Observe your partner carefully; if after two minutes, they have not let our a breath, relaxed slightly, and adjusted to the pain of the clamp, remove it.

Removing clamps: keeping your hand still, grasp the end of the nipple clamp and pinch the free ends together until the clamp releases the nipple. Slowly move it away, and do not release pressure on the ends of the clamp until it is away from the body. Allowing a clamp to close again on sore tissue is extremely painful! DON'T rub the freshly unclamped nipple; let blood return and the tissue recover as touching it will cause great pain.

There are other forms of pain play, including caning, single-tail whipping, clamping more intimate parts of the body, and electrical play, which have not been included here due to the limited depth availabel through this article. If you desire to learn more about these activities, books, websites, and local BDSM organizations and clubs are a good place to start, learn and play real-time. Play on a safe and consensual basis, and communicate often and openly with your partner.
